Three Glenfield United games are featured this weekend, with most teams playing their last matches of 2012.
Under 14 G league leaders Glenfield United 2010 U14 were in action at Gynsill Lane, as they hosted sixth placed Whetstone Juniors 2012. Both sides are familiar with each other having met just last week, with the game ending 3-3.
After a change of pitch fifteen minutes before kick off, the game got underway with United making a great start with two goals ten minutes in.
Firstly a low cross from the left across the penalty area was turned into his own net by Whetstones' number two after being put under pressure.
A second came two minutes later in more spectacular fashion. Midfielder Alex Pullen received the ball before firing a long range right footed strike into the far corner.
Glenfield remained comfortable with their two goal lead for most of the first half. That was until five minutes before the break as Whetstone grabbed a goal back.
Hesitation in the Glenfield backline was capitalised on by Whetstone's number 11 striker who prodded the ball into the net from a few yards out.
The second half was played at a high tempo, with Glenfield looking to retain their two goal lead, while Whetstone pushed for an equaliser.
And the scores were nearly level ten minutes from time. A corner from the left wasn't fully cleared and a Whetstone player's shot went just wide.
The visitors kept searching for a late leveller but it didn't come. The result leaves Glenfield top of the table going into 2013, three points clear of second placed Harborough Town who do have three games in hand.
The lunchtime kick off at Gynsill Lane saw Glenfield United Lions U9 take on Barlestone St Giles.
It was the Lions who took the lead, and just like the Under 14 2010 game after them, came courtesy of an own goal as a corner from the right went in off Barlestone's number five.
The visitors scored a goal at the right end five minutes later though, number 12 with a shot from inside the area which went into the corner of the net to make it 1-1.
United kept the pressure on though, and were rewarded as they retook the lead. An error in the defence after good closing down from the Glenfield strikers saw the ball break to Harry Laundon who fired into the roof of the net.
The hosts looked set to go ahead at half time, but with the last kick of the half Barlestone equalised for the second time. Number eight was put through one on one and shot low into the bottom corner.
And for the first time in the game Barlestone took the lead five minutes after the break. The Glenfield 'keeper parried a shot which was followed up by number three who finished from close range.
The Lions kept pushing for a deserved equaliser and went close on several occasions, but a third goal didn't come as the game finished 2-3. The result leaves Glenfield seventh with five points from seven games.
The first game of the day was at Ellis Park, as Glenfield United U12 9v9 welcomed Lutterworth Town, a place above United in the league standings.
The deadlock was broken two minutes prior to half time. A Glenfield corner from the right was headed clear, only as far as left back Sam Greenhill who unleashed a left foot strike from the edge of the area which went through a crowd of bodies and in for only his second ever Glenfield United goal.
But just as many minutes after the interval and the scores were level. A ball over the top fell to number nine who chipped the ball over the Glenfield 'keeper and in.
Glenfield were then let off the hook after 50 minutes as Lutterworth had three chances to score. Number 11 ran through one-on-one but saw his shot saved before the rebound was cleared off the line. A third shot then hit the bar before the ball was cleared and the score remained at one each.
Both sides kept pushing for a winner, and Glenfield looked more likely to get it as the game went on, but the game ended as a draw. United remain in fifth place and they play Borough Alliance at Ellis Park next weekend.
