Leicester City spent £1.81 million in transfer fees during the 2011/12 season - the second highest amount in the Football League - it was revealed today.
That figure is a rise from £1.28 million spent during 2010/11 and £650,000 which was spent during 2009/10, meaning the figure increased three fold from as many seasons. West Ham United spent the most on agents fees of all the Football League clubs, paying out £4.31 million.
City bought 16 senior players last season either permanently or on loan and while it is not known what individual agent was paid, it was a club record high and averages out at £113,000 per player. In total, Football League clubs spent £21.7 million, a rise of £5 million from the previous season.
The report shows that £18.7 million of that figure was spent by Championship clubs, with £1.8 million being spent in League One and £900,000 in League Two.
Five clubs - Hartlepool, Accrington Stanley, AFC Wimbledon, Barnet and Crewe Alexandra - paid no fees.
Football League chairman Greg Clarke said of the figures: "While £21m is a lot of money leaving the game, it should also be noted that a
considerable amount of this total has been spent by a small number of clubs.
"In fact, almost a fifth of the overall figure was spent by one club alone"
"Where such spending forms part of a sustainable business plan it shouldn't be
of great concern and supporters should be encouraged to see our clubs committing
themselves to the new Financial Fair Play regulations that will take effect
across all three divisions in the new season.
"In time, these rules will require clubs to be more circumspect with regard to
their spending and may help reduce the costs incurred in this area."
