Leicester City v Manchester City: Match Preview

A week ago, Man City were preparing to take on European Champions Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena in their final Champions League group match. Tonight they travel to the King Power Stadium to face Leicester City in the quarter finals of the Capital One Cup.

While this competition may be at the bottom of Manuel Pelligrini's priorities, it is certainly a winnable one, and they're expected to reach the semi-finals after being drawn against the only non Premier League side left in the competition.

But Leicester will give the billionaires a good test. They're currently third in the Championship and have only lost once at home this season in all competitions. Plus they've proven they can beat top flight opposition after overcoming Fulham in the last round.

This is the second game of a big week for Leicester. They started it off with a 1-1 draw at home to Burnley, while this weekend sees them take on league leaders Queens Park Rangers.

But given Man City's recent form, their 6-3 win against Premier League leaders Arsenal and victory in Germany, it would be the biggest shock of the season if Leicester won tonight.

Team news:

Leicester manager Nigel Pearson will be without strikers Chris Wood and Tom Hopper with hamstring and shin problems respectively, while Sean St Ledger remains out with a groin injury.

However, Jamie Vardy is available. The forward went off during Saturday's draw with Burnley with a foot injury but should play tonight.

The visitors will be without Sergio Aguero after he picked up a calf injury in their 6-3 win against Arsenal on Saturday and has been ruled out for a month. Defenders Micah Richards and Matija Nastasic are also sidelined with hamstring and calf problems respectively.

Pelligrini is likely to make numerous changes from their weekend victory over Arsenal, with Joe Hart likely to start in goal. Edin Dzeko, James Milner and Joleon Lescott are also set to be involved.

Likely line-ups:

Leicester: Schmeichel, De Laet, Morgan, Moore, Konchesky, Knockaert, James, Drinkwater, Dyer, Vardy, Nugent.

Man City: Hart, Zabaleta, Lescott, Boyata, Kolarov, Javi Garcia, Rodwell, Milner, Jesus Navas, Dzeko, Jovetic.

Odds: Leicester (11/2) Draw (4/1) Man City (2/5)

Edin Dzeko to score a hat-trick (14/1)

Man City to win 5-1 (33/1)

Europa League Draw: Swans drawn against Napoli

Managerless Tottenham Hotspur will face Ukrainian side Dnipro in the last 32 of the Europa League, while Swansea play host to European giants Napoli.

Dnipro, managed by former Spurs boss Juande Ramos, finished second in Group E and are fourth in the Ukrainian league. Former Blackburn striker Nikola Kalinic is on their books.

Swansea were handed a dream draw as they play Italian giants Napoli, who were unlucky to have exited the Champions League after finishing third in Group F despite winning four of their six group games. Rafa Benitez' side are second in Serie A and have a squad full of world class talent, including Pepe Reina, Gonzalo Higuain and Marek Hamsik.

Should Spurs and Swansea win their last 32 ties, they will play the winners of the PAOK Salonika v Benfica and Porto v Eintracht Frankfurt matches respectively.

Elsewhere, Juventus play Trabzonspor and the prospect of another trip to Turkey after losing to Galatasaray in their final Champions League group game which saw them fall into the Europa League.

Their is also the prospect of a Sevilla derby in the last 16, so long as Sevilla beat Slovenian side NK Maribor and Real Betis get past Rubin Kazan of Russia.

The first leg ties of the last 32 will take place on 20th February, with the second leg a week later. The last 16 matches will take place on 13th/20th March.

Champions League Draw Last 16: Man City drawn against Barcelona

Arsenal and Manchester City both paid the price of finishing second in their Champions League group after they were handed tough draws for the last 16 of the competition.

City were the first name out and were drawn against Barcelona, while Arsenal play Champions League holders Bayern Munich, a repeat of the same draw from last season.

In contrast, group winners Man United and Chelsea face easier ties. David Moyes' side face Olympiakos, while their will be a return to Stamford Bridge for Didier Drogba after the Blues were drawn against Galatasaray.

Elsewhere, Real Madrid will face Schalke, Atletico Madrid play AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain were drawn against Bayer Leverkusen and last seasons beaten finalists Borussia Dortmund play Russian side Zenit St Petersburg.

Bayern Munich v Man City - Match Report

Manchester City staged an incredible comeback against European Champions Bayern Munich, coming from 2-0 down to win 3-2.

The Germans were 2-0 up inside 12 minutes, but goals from David Silva, an Aleksander Kolarov penalty and James Milner ensured City recorded an historic victory, although the result wasn't enough for them to top Group D.

City boss Manuel Pelligrini made seven changes to the side that drew 1-1 at Southampton on Saturday, with the big game versus Arsenal at Saturday lunchtime on the horizon. Sergio Aguero, Alvaro Negredo and Vincent Kompany were all named on the bench, with Joe Hart given his first start since their last Champions League game vs Viktoria Plzen. There was also a return from injury for David Silva.

That was in contrast to Pep Guardiola who named arguably his strongest possible side, including the Ballon D'or shortlisted Franck Ribery.

Before the game, both teams posed for a photo to remember Nelson Mandela with the banner reading 'Madiba, The World Will Never Forget', who died on Thursday.

The Germans gave Man City a lesson in the reverse fixture in October and it was more of the same at the Allianz Arena in the opening 20 minutes.

Signs of City's vulnerability at the back were evident from the off as Joleon Lescott and Hart got in a mix up, with the England defender's pass back going out for a corner.

Things got worse just moments later as Bayern took the lead after just five minutes. A wonderful cross-field ball by Dante found Thomas Muller who chested the ball down before firing past Hart.

Provider then almost turned goalscorer, but Dante's header from a freekick was comfortably held by Hart.

A second Bayern goal looked inevitable though, and it arrived just twelve minutes in. Following an error by Lescott that was nearly punished by Franck Ribery, the resulting corner saw Muller's shot blocked but the ball fell to the unmarked Mario Gotze who couldn't miss.

City's nightmare start continued as Micah Richards limped off with a hamstring injury, with Pablo Zabaleta replacing him.

It looked set to be a very long evening for the visitors, having not mustered a serious attempt on goal for half-an-hour. That was until Jesus Navas' early cross was headed back across goal by Milner, with Silva on hand to slide in for a tap in.

That goal seemed to give City belief and although they didn't create anymore clear cut chances for the remainder of the first half, they kept the hosts quiet, with Demichelis blocking a Mario Mandzukic shot the only real threat.

City's improved performance continued at the start of the second half, as Edin Dzeko's shot from a Silva pass was saved by Neuer.

Before the hour mark City were awarded a penalty as Dante was adjudged to have brought down Milner. Stand-in captain Kolarov put the spot-kick away into the bottom left corner, sending Neuer the wrong way.

And City completed their unlikely comeback minutes after levelling. Navas' low cross bypassed everyone until the ball fell to Milner on the edge of the area, who calmly side footed the ball past Neuer into the bottom corner for his first goal of the season.

Remarkably, City were now just one goal away from a result that would see them top Group D, with a 4-2 win enough for them to finish above their opponents. In pursuit of the goal, Pelligrini brought on Spaniard Negredo for Silva for the last twenty minutes.

That fourth goal nearly came when Dante hesistated in defence, allowing Negredo to take the ball off him, but from a tight angle found Neuer's trailing leg.

With two minutes to go, Pelligrini took off a striker, Dzeko, for midfielder Rodwell, suggesting he would be just happy with the win rather than go out for the elusive fourth.

City had to settle for the three and recorded a historic victory against the European Champions. And although City finished second, they showed that they will be a test for anyone in the knockout stages.

Glenfield United Weekly Review: 21/04/2013

Just the one match report for this edition of the weekly review, the final review of the season.

Glenfield United Under 12 9v9 welcomed Borough Alliance, their last game of the season and last game at Ellis Park as they make the step up to 11 a side at Gynsill Lane next season.

The hosts were on a seven match unbeaten run and had won their last three games, while the visitors were second bottom but had enjoyed a 3-0 win versus Loughborough last Sunday.

And it was Alliance who opened the scoring inside the opening five minutes. A freekick from 20 yards out was tipped onto the post by Glenfield 'keeper Morgan Fenton and the follow up also struck the woodwork, but the third effort was poked home by number 11 to give Alliance a surprise lead.

Glenfield were then dealt another blow when 'keeper Fenton went off with a shin injury, meaning Kyle Belcher had to stand in between the sticks.

Halfway through the first half and Glenfield got their equaliser. A ball over the top was latched on to by the ever lively Oliver Lewis before the striker side footed it home.

And Glenfield took the lead before half time as winger Harry Windle shot into the top right corner with an emphatic finish.

Meanwhile at the other end, stand in 'keeper Belcher didn't have much to do in goal, and the start of the second half saw Fenton shake off his injury and return in goal.

Glenfield kept plugging away for a third to put the game to bed but had to wait until five minutes before full time. A cross from the right bypassed two Glenfield players before being met by Daniel Youngs who struck it swweetly on the half volley into the bottom corner.

And with virtually the last touch of the game, Windle got his second with a header which went over the line after the Borough 'keeper, who had an impressive game, let the ball slip from his grasp.

The 4-1 win marks the end of a good season for the under 12's, who had hoped to finish the season in third with yesterday's win, but a 4-2 win for Hinckley away to Loughborough meant the Knitters finished above Glenfield.

United finish the season with 28 points from their 18 games, including eight wins, four of which came from the last four games of the season.

Elsewhere, Glenfield United 2010 Under 14's finished their season with a heavy 9-0 defeat away to league leaders Harborough Town 2012. Despite the scoreline it was still a good season for United, finishing third in the table with 33 points from their 18 games including ten wins.

Glenfield United Tigers Under 10's ended their season with a 3-1 win away to Melton Foxes Cubs. The win means the Tigers finish the season in sixth place with 12 points from their 14 games.

Glenfield United results: Thurmaston Magpies Thunder U7 X-X Glenfield United Foxes U7, Rugby Town Pumas P-P Glenfield United Hawks U7, Melton Foxes Cubs U10 1-3 Glenfield United Tigers U10, Glenfield United U12 9v9 4-1 Borough Alliance 2010 U12 9v9, Harborough Town 2012 U14 9-0 Glenfield United 2010 U14.

Glenfield United Weekly Review - 14/04/2013

This weekend saw the last Sunday games at Gynsill Lane for another season as Glenfield United give way to the upcoming cricket season.

With no 10:30am kick off, the first match of the day took place at lunchtime as Glenfield United Tigers Under 10's welcomed third placed Oadby Owls Eagles. It was the Tigers last home game of the season and last game at Gynsill Lane for a couple of years as they move to Ellis Park for the step up to 9v9 football.

Glenfield held their own for the opening ten minutes, but Oadby took the lead halfway through the first half scoring on the break from a home team throw in. A long ball from the Oadby defence was latched onto by the Oadby striker before firing hard into the bottom corner.

Oadby were always a threat on the break throughout the first half and were denied on the stroke of half time from making it 2-0 by a superb double save by Glenfield goalkeeper Charlie Cross.

Ten minutes into the second half and it was the turn of the Oadby goalkeeper to take the limelight, scoring from a goalkick as the blustery conditions got behind his clearance, took a big bounce and looped over his counterpart into the net.

That fortuitous goal seemed to knock the confidence of the Glenfield players and minutes later it was 3-0 as Oadby scored a tap in on the line following a goalmouth scramble.

The scoring was complete five minutes before full time, and goalkeeper Cross who had been superb throughout the game could do nothing about the fourth goal. A corner on the right was met first time on the volley at the front post and sailed into the net.

It was a harsh scoreline on Glenfield against what was a very well organised Oadby side. Their final game of the season sees them travel to Melton Foxes this Sunday, looking to end the campaign with three points.

The second and final game of the day saw Glenfield United Under 14's take on Anstey Swifts, with the visitors still in contention to win the division A title.

Anstey scored twice in the opening ten minutes through number 11 and then 14, setting the tone for the rest of the match.

Number 10 scored twice in quick succession before half time to make it 4-0 at the break.

Five minutes into the second half and number 14 got his second of the game before number 6 made it six with a shot from an acute angle which went in off the post.

There was some cheer for Glenfield as striker Shiv Odedra got on the scoresheet, meeting a cross from the left at the back post.

Anstey's number 22 got on the scoresheet as he slotted home into the bottom right corner from 12 yards before number 11 scored again to make it 8-1.

Number 10 brought up his hat-trick with a rasping shot into the top left corner and number four made it double figures.

Number 11 scored a direct freekick and number 8 finished off the scoring to make it 12-1.

It was very harsh on Glenfield as they played the whole game with 11 players and no subs as fatigue played its part after a long and gruelling season. Their final game of the season is away to Blaby & Whetstone in a fortnight. Visitors Anstey move to within three points of leaders Thurlaston with two games in hand.

Elsewhere, Glenfield United 2005 U14's lost their DEFG cup semi final against Groby Juniors 3-2, while our under 11 9v9 team played their final game of the season away to second placed Wigston United and were involved in a 14 goal thriller, losing 9-5.

There was some success this weekend though as Glenfield United U12 9v9 won 2-1 away to third placed Hinckley United Knitters. The win puts them into fourth place with two games of the season left to play both at Ellis Park. Glenfield United Hawks Under 7's also tasted victory, winning 3-0 away to Syston Town All Stars and producing their best performance of the season.

Glenfield United results: Markfield Colts U7 X-X Glenfield United Foxes U7, Syston Town All Stars U7 0-3 Glenfield United Hawks U7, Glenfield United Tigers U10 0-4 Oadby Owls Eagles U10, Wigston United 2011 U11 9v9 9-5 Glenfield United U11 9v9, Hinckley United Knitters U12 9v9 1-2 Glenfield United U12 9v9, Glenfield United U14 1-12 Anstey Swifts U14, Groby Juniors U14 3-2 Glenfield United 2005 U14.

Glenfield United midweek fixtures: 16/04 Glenfield United U18 v Anstey Swifts U18. 17/04 Glenfield United U12 9v9 v Cosby U12 9v9, Glenfield United 2005 U14 v Earl Shilton U14. 18/04 Houghton Rangers v Glenfield United U18.

Glenfield United Weekly Review: 07/04/2013

For the first time in five weeks due to postponements and the bad weather, football returned to Gynsill Lane this weekend, and a total of eight Glenfield United teams were in action.

The first game saw Glenfield United 2005 under 14's host Leicester Bharat in the quarter finals of the under 14 DEFG shield.

After a bright start from the hosts where they had a couple of chances to break the deadlock, Glenfield took the lead inside the opening fifteen minutes from the penalty spot. Callum Wakeling was bundled over by Bharat's number 13 and right back Spencer Halford drilled home the penalty emphatically.

Ten minutes before half time and United doubled their lead through Wakeling and in impressive fashion. A corner from the right by Nick Charalambou was met first time on the volley by Charalambou, leaving the Bharat 'keeper no chance to react quick enough.

The visitors pegged Glenfield back five minutes later though, scoring on the break. Number 12 held off the challenge of a United defender before firing a shot away which was parried, but the striker was quickest to pounce to the rebound and scored from a tight angle.

That goal seemed to give Bharat belief going into the second 35 minutes and started to create more chances as the half went on. 15 minutes from time they got their equaliser, although it came in fortuitous fashion. A cross from the left by Bharat's number 15 seemed innocuous enough, but it ended up looping over the Glenfield 'keeper and into the back of the net.

Glenfield weren't disheartened though and regained the lead just five minutes later. Winger Lochlan Murray dribbled into the box but saw his shot get parried, but the rebound went in off the shins of Bharat's number four to make it 3-2.

There was controversy five minutes from time as Bharat thought they had equalised. A cross from the right was met by the head of number 12 which bounced off the underside of the bar and onto the ground, but the referee adjudged that the ball didn't cross the line.

In the last minute Glenfield put the game beyond doubt. A ball from Halford found Murray in the area and this time he wasn't denied, scoring from close range.

It was a deserved win for Glenfield against opponents who sit on top of division F. They face Groby in the semi finals of the DEFG shield on Sunday at a neutral venue of Asfordby Amateurs.

Glenfield United Lions Under 9's were in action for the lunchtime game at Gynsill Lane as they welcomed second placed Mowbray Rangers Pumas.

United had the better of the opening ten minutes of the first half, always looking a danger when they got the ball forward. However, it was Rangers that went closest when number eight hit a long range strike which bounced the top of the crossbar and out of play.

A minute later and Glenfield opened the scoring as the lively Faris scored with a super finish into the bottom corner.

Shortly after the break, Glenfield 'keeper Kieran Stanfield made a superb stop to deny Mowbray from equalising, tipping a stinging shot onto the post and out for a corner.

Stanfield and the rest of the Lions team did enough for the rest of the game to keep a clean sheet and secure the three points which takes them to 11 points with one game left. It was a very good performance from all the players and the improvement was clear to see.

The final game of the day saw Glenfield United 2010 Under 14's take on Asfordby Amateurs JYFC 2010 in a crucial game at the top of the Leicester & District Sunday Juniors League Division G table. United started the day in second place, with Asfordby just a place and three points behind.

Seven minutes in and it was Glenfield who scored the first goal. Persistent work from Alex Pullen saw him allow to get his shot away which went in off the left hand upright.

However, the scores were level again a few minutes later. Number 10 beat the offside trap and was put through one on one with Oliver Fenton before lobbing the ball over him and tapping into an empty net.

Asfordby then took the lead for the first time, scoring in almost similar fashion to their first as number 10 again broke the offside trap before lobbing the onrushing Fenton, although this time the ball went straight in.

Minutes later it was 3-1 as a corner from the left was met at the far post by Asfordby right back number two before firing home.

After a stirring team talk at half time by manager Aaron Mace, Glenfield reduced the defecit minutes after the break. A long ball over the Asfordby defence wasn't dealt with which United capatilised on before Ethan Fitch tapped in.

However, Asfordby restored their two goal lead two minutes later as the referee awarded a penalty for handball. Number nine stepped up and scored via the right hand post.

Glenfield gave themselves a chance of getting something from the game when Dane Mace's shot was spilled by the Asfordby 'keeper and Fitch was quickest to pounce for his second of the game. But they couldn't find an equaliser during the remainding twenty minutes of what was a better second half performance from the hosts.

The result means Asfordby leapfrog Glenfield into second place on goal difference, plus they have three games in hand on United. Glenfield's last game of the season is away to league leaders Harborough Town in a fortnight.

Glenfield United results: Borough Alliance U8 X-X Glenfield United Tigers U8, Glenfield United Lions U9 1-0 Mowbray Rangers Pumas U9, Glenfield United Tigers 0-12 Riverside United Kestrels U9, Glenfield United Tigers U10 0-5 Coalville Town Rooks U10, Cosby United 2011 U12 9v9 3-3 Glenfield United U12 9v9, Oadby Owls FC U14 4-1 Glenfield United U14, Glenfield United 2005 U14 4-2 Leicester Bharat U14, Glenfield United 2010 U14 3-4 Asfordby Amateurs JYFC 2010 U14, Glenfield United U18 P-P Harborough Town YFC U18.

Glenfield United Weekly Review: 18/03/2013

For the second consecutive week, games at Gynsill Lane were postponed due to waterlogged pitches. However at Ellis Park, the under 12 9v9 game went ahead as they took on third placed Hinckley United Knitters.

Inside the opening five minutes the visitors took the lead. A through ball from midfield found striker number 11 who cooly finished, finding the bottom right corner after being put through one-on-one.

Glenfield gradually grew back into the game as the rain began to get heavier and equalised before half time through Harry Windle. The speedy winger ran with the ball down the right and into the box before shooting off the underside of the bar and in via a touch from a helpless Hinckley defender.

A minute after half time, Glenfield took the lead. A throw in from the left found Kyle Belcher who turned and shot from the edge of the box and saw his shot sneak in through the 'keepers hands with the wet conditions playing their part.

But just as soon as Glenfield went ahead, they were pegged back as the referee awarded a penalty. Number 11 stepped up and found the bottom left corner, sending Morgan Fenton the wrong way.

Both teams pushed for a winner but it proved elusive, with both teams having to settle for a point. Glenfield remain fifth in the table with 15 points and five games left to play. They welcome eighth placed Cosby United to Ellis Park on Sunday.

The only other Glenfield United team in action were the under 11 9v9 team as they travelled to Beaumont Town but lost 5-1. They play their final home game of the season this weekend, hosting Quorn before travelling to Wigston on the last day.

Glenfield United Weekly Review: 10/03/2013

A mixture of snow and heavy rain over the past few days led to five of the eight scheduled Glenfield United games get postponed this weekend.

There is some action to write about though, and it came at Ellis Park as Glenfield United U12 9v9 took on Hinckley United Colts in the cup. The hosts knocked out second division side Humberstone Rangers in the last round, but faced a tough task against a Hinckley side currently second in division one and challenging for the title.

It was Glenfield that took a deserved lead after ten minutes, and it came from a Hinckley corner. The ball was cleared and winger Harry Windle found Daniel Youngs with a lovely ball over the Colts defence before the striker fired low into the net.

Midway through the first half Hinckley equalised as number 16 had a shot from inside the area which found the top left postage stamp, leaving 'keeper Morgan Fenton no chance.

The visitors were then given the chance to take the lead from the spot as number 10 was pushed over in the penalty area. However, number 14's effort was saved by Fenton who dived to his left and parried the ball away to safety to ensure the first half ended all square, a fair reflection of how the first 30 minutes went given Glenfield's fine performance.

However, two quick goals for the visitors halfway through the second half put the game out of reach for United, with the first coming in fortuitous circumstances.

A long ball from the Hinckley defence seemed innocuous enough as 'keeper Fenton came out for it, but his clearance ricocheted off the legs of Hinckley's number 14 and rolled into the net. The third also came from number 14, slotting the ball home from a through ball.

Five minutes from time and a cross by number eight from the right was met first time on the half volley by number seven before number 16 rounded off the scoring three minutes from time.

The 5-1 scoreline was unfair on Glenfield given the spirited first half display, with no player having a bad game at all - Hinckley's quality simply shone through. Glenfield return to league action next weekend, playing Hinckley United Knitters at Ellis Park.

Elsewhere, Glenfield United Under 7 Hawks draw 3-3 at Castle Donnington. That followed their impressive 3-2 win away to Glen Villa last weekend, coming from behind twice to win the last few minutes. They will look to continue their recent good form when they play their third game in as many weeks this Sunday, welcoming Oadby Owls Hawks to Gynsill Lane.

Glenfield United Lions U9 travelled to Stanton United and were 5-2 victors. The win takes them to a total of eight points with two games left to play this season. They play Stanton again next weekend in the reverse fixture at Gynsill Lane.

Glenfield United Weekly Review: 03/03/2013

The busiest weekend of the season so far in terms of fixtures as 11 of our 12 Glenfield United teams were in action on Sunday.

The first featured game came from Ellis Park as the under 11 9v9 team welcomed near neighbours Anstey Swifts, currently in fifth place and beat Glenfield 5-1 back in the mid October.

After an opening 20 minutes where Glenfield 'keeper Matt Moulds was the stand out player, commanding his area and making some good saves, it was Anstey who opened the scoring.

It came through their number ten, who had been a threat leading up to the goal. Anstey caught Glenfield on the break and the striker netted from outside the area, shooting over Moulds.

And it was the same player who doubled Anstey's lead five minutes later, showing persistent work to nick the ball off the Glenfield defence before scoring from the edge of the box.

The scoreline was a tad harsh on United who created chances throughout the first half. The closest they went to reducing the defecit came moments after going two down as Jacob Taylor hit a sweet volley from 20 plus yards which cracked against the bar and bounced over.

Whatever was said at half time by the Glenfield coaching team certainly had an impact as the game was turned on its head in the opening ten minutes of the second half.

After Jacob Taylor's shot was blocked, a cross from James Pye fell to striker Aariyan Palana who thumped the ball into the roof of the net to start the comeback.

The equaliser came in slighlty controversial circumstances. A run from midfield by Pattison Mafuana saw him put through one on one with the Anstey 'keeper and the Glenfield man scored low out of the 'keepers reach. The linesman gave the goal as offside, but the referee over ruled, judging that Mafuana's run came from an onside position.

By now the impetus was with the hosts and they duly took the lead just minutes after equalising. A corner from the right wasn't cleared by the Anstey defence and as the ball bounced around in the area, Palana pounced again to make it 3-2.

With more than half of the second half remaining there were a few nervy moments, but three minutes before full time the game was settled as Albert Findley found the bottom corner, scoring on the break as Anstey pushed forward for an equaliser.

It was a superb turnaround for Glenfield and at full time there was much joy amongst players, parents and coaches. The difference in class from the start of the season is plain to see and although they remain in the lower half of the table, the form they've shown since Christmas bodes well for next season.

The second game of the day was across the village at Gynsill Lane as Glenfield United Under 8's welcomed Highfield Rangers Jaguars.

Three quick goals from the visitors set the tone for the match, as numbers ten, three and seven scored inside the opening ten minutes.

Number three then got his second five minutes prior to the break, before number ten made it 5-0 with the last touch of the half, feigning a shot from the edge of the area before firing low into the corner.

Number seven brought up his second five minutes after the break while two minutes later number three brought up his hat-trick.

Two more goals from number ten, the second being the goal of the game with a strike from outside the area, made the final score 9-0 to Highfield.

As the scoreline would suggest, the visitors were a very good side and possess some talented young players. But there were some promising signs for Glenfield as they continue their development and when they play a side of a similar ability, will be sure to give them a game.

The final game of the day saw Glenfield United Under 18's, fresh from their spirited and by all accounts deserved 4-4 draw at league leaders Anstey Swifts, take on third placed Oadby Owls.

Glenfield held their own against the visitors but it was Oadby that broke the deadlock after 25 minutes, and it came from a Glenfield freekick.

The freekick was cleared and as Glenfield struggled to get back, Oadby countered with number 11 cutting in from the right wing and scoring.

Ten minutes later and it was 2-0 to the Owls. A cross from the right was headed clear, only for the ball to fall to Oadby's number four who caught it sweetly on the volley and found the back of the net, despite Glenfield goalkeeper Mitch Sewell getting fingertips to it.

Oadby hit the woodwork a couple of minutes into the second half, number 11 heading a cross from the right which hit the base of the post.

Glenfield's closest effort came five minutes from time when a hooked shot from Sam Gill was tipped over the bay by the Oadby 'keeper.

The 2-0 defeat for Glenfield, coupled with Harborough's 1-0 win over Whitwick, means United have slipped to 10th. Glenfield travel to bottom side Whitwick this weekend.

Stuart Taylor. What could have been.

My standard Saturday evening ritual of watching Match of the Day inspired me to write this latest blog post.

Everton v Reading wasn't a particulalrly stand out game - the hosts won 3-1 to maintain their hopes of Champions League football - except for one notable appearance, that of Stuart Taylor.

The former Man City, Aston Villa and Arsenal goalkeeper is now 32 years old, yet Saturday's run out at Goodison Park was his first competitive appearance since turning out for City in their 4-2 victory over Scunthorpe in an FA Cup Fourth round tie in January 2010.

That was his only appearance during his three years at City. His last league appearance came during a loan spell at Cardiff City in 2009, where he shipped six goals against Preston North End.

Taylor came through the Arsenal youth ranks and after injuries to David Seaman and Richard Wright during the 2001/02 season, where he played ten times and won a Premier League winner's medal, was touted as Seaman's successor.

So what has happened to Taylor? And why was Saturday's appearance just the 89th of his career?

Well the answer to the first question is not a lot. He spent time away from Highbury with loan spells at Bristol Rovers, Crystal Palace, Peterborough and Leicester. I saw him in action a couple of times during his brief spell at the Walkers Stadium (as it was known then) and he impressed me. Indeed, he was probably Craig Levein's best signing! He was certainly a good shot stopper and kept four clean sheets in ten games and lost only three games during that period.

That was almost ten years ago and would have been 23 years old, with the best part of his career still ahead of him and remained held in high regard at Highbury.

Taylor in his "glory days" at Arsenal
After 18 appearances at Arsenal he was released in 2005 and snapped up by Aston Villa manager David O'Leary on a free transfer to compete with Thomas Sorensen. His words to the media after he signed on the dotted line were: "This is all about career progression. It was no good for me to stay at Arsenal. Thomas is a great goalkeeper. But it's up to me to push him all the way. This is a new start. I enjoyeed my time at Arsenal but it's time to move on" He made 17 appearances during four years at Villa Park in all competitions.

Taylor was released in 2009 but joined Manchester City's Mark Hughes as cover for Shay Given but made just that one appearance in the FA Cup at Glanford Park before being released at the end of last season before Reading snapped him up.

To be fair to Taylor, he has had to compete to be number one with some of the best goalkeepers in Premier League history: Seaman at Arsenal, Friedel at Villa, Given and Hart at Man City. The cynic in me says that Taylor has been happy to be second or third choice 'keeper at some big clubs, sitting on the bench every week, playing the odd reserve team game and picking up his pretty reasonable pay packet every month.

The potential he showed at Arsenal suggested he would be a good Premier League 'keeper and it's obvious he hasn't fulfilled that promise. But maybe instead of sitting on the bench, taking the easy option, he could've gone down a division and been a first choice 'keeper. He was certainly good enough for the Championship.

And who knows, with the lack of quality English goalkeepers we've had in recent years, maybe the odd international cap would've been to his name. Surely that would be more rewarding than a career as a backup.

You can show your grandchildren your medals, but you can't show them your payslip.

Glenfield United Weekly Review: 24/02/2013

After last Sunday's three defeats across our featured games and only one draw from all eight Glenfield United matches, our seven games this weekend offered more to shout home about.

First up were Glenfield United 2005 Under 14's who welcomed Whetstone Juniors to Gynsill Lane looking to leapfrog them in the table. The visitors started the day in fifth on 18 points, with Glenfield just a place and three points behind.

As the league table would suggest, both teams were fairly evenly matched during the opening stages. Eventually the deadlock was broken though, with Whetstone opening the scoring. A through ball from the visitors' number ten found number 17 who finished low, despite the 'keeper getting a hand to the shot.

That's how the score stayed until ten minutes from time as Glenfield found an equaliser which they had been pushing for for the duration of the match. A corner from the right was met with a thumping header by Callum Wakeling into the roof of the net.

By now the impetus was with the home side as they looked for a winner and it duly came just minutes before full time. A cross from the right was scrambled over the line at the far post by Wakeling and despite Whetstone clearing the ball, the referee judged that the ball went over the line.

United showed good character to come back from a goal down and snatch the three points at the death. The win means they go ahead of Whetstone into fifth. They travel to bottom placed Oadby Owls Tawny's on Sunday.

The lunchtime game at Gynsill Lane saw Glenfield United Foxes Under 7's take on Kingsway Rangers.

It was Rangers who broke the deadlock inside the opening ten minutes from a corner. It was initially blocked but followed up by Kingsway's number ten who scored.

Five minutes before half time and the visitors doubled their lead. A Glenfield goal kick fell to number six who hit the ball first time and went in.

Three minutes after the break and Kingsway won a penalty after number six was fouled. However, the spot kick went wide of the left upright.

Glenfield then reduced the deficit to one goal as Josh Williamson dribbled from outside the box before finishing low.

And in the last minute Glenfield found a deserved equaliser. Three Glenfield players were waiting in the box to score and it was Wiliamson who got his second with a low finish.

The final game of the day saw Glenfield United 2010 Under 14's in action as they welcomed Ibstock. The hosts started the day in third, while Ibstock were in ninth.

Glenfield took the lead inside the opening ten minutes. A corner from the left by Dane Mace was headed back across goal by Dillon Smith and Sam Leach headed it into the net.

Two quick goals halfway through the first half then sealed the game for the hosts. A good through ball by Lewis Goodyear was latched on to by Leach before hammered it into the roof of the net for his and Glenfield's second.

Leach brought up his hat-trick with arguably the best of the trio. Nothing looked to be on when a long ball was hoisted up field, but Leach outpaced the Ibstock defence, giving them a few yards head start, got to the ball first and showed good composure by shooting into the bottom corner.

A fourth was added ten minutes from full time through Alex Pullen. Another great corner by Dane Mace was met first time on the volley by Pullen to complete the scoring.

The 4-0 win sees Glenfield remain in third and go level on points with Harborough Town and Asfordby Amateurs on 30 points, but both those sides have games in hand over United.

Glenfield United results: Glenfield United Foxes U7 2-2 Kingsway Rangers U7, Anstey Swifts Storm U9 11-0 Glenfield United Tigers U9, Hamilton Youth U10 10-0 Glenfield United Tigers U10, Humberstone Rangers U12 9v9 1-2 Glenfield United U12 9v9, Glenfield United 2005 U14 2-1 Whetstone Juniors FC U14, Glenfield United 2010 U14 4-0 Ibstock United Youth U14, Anstey Swifts FC U18 4-4 Glenfield United U18.

Why Leicester fans would be stupid to boo Yann Kermorgant.

Tonight sees the return of French striker Yann Kermorgant to the King Power Stadium for the first time since THAT penalty against Cardiff City in the second leg of the Championship playoff semi final of the 2009/10 season.

It is probably the most infamous penalty in the history of Leicester City Football Club and I'm sure like all other City fans, it pains me to watch/listen to it again. There was even a song recorded by City fan Dave Henson to the sound of Bonnie Tyler's Total Eclipse of the Heart, where he captures the moment perfectly, if not a little harshly: "As we watched our TV screen/ I was sure that he'd have ripped it/ Could not believe what I had seen/ When the stupid wanker chipped it."

That proved to be his last competitive game for Leicester. The season after he was loaned to French side Arles-Avignon, before being released from the club months after his return. Ex City player and coach Chris Powell was quick to snap him up for tonight's visitors Charlton and Kermorgant was a key player as the Addicks won the League 1 title at a canter. He's now a popular player amongst Charlton fans and has found the net seven times this season, despite being out for most of the season through injury.

The reason for writing this blog (and I don't intend for it to sound like a rant) is that it has come to my attention that some Leicester fans plan to boo Kermorgant tonight after what he did three years ago in South Wales. What a stupid thing that would be.

For starters, everyone misses penalties. As he said in an interview with BBC Radio Leicester commentator Ian Stringer which was broadcast yesterday, he didn't mean to miss it. He said the reason he chipped it and didn't just hammer it was: "because the pressure on me, my legs shaking because I was thinking if I tried to shoot hard I would shoot above or outside. If I catched the middle and the 'keeper dived, it is finished. I just didn't do it really well..... I didn't decide to miss."

But what if it had gone in? We would probably have admired his bottle that in a high pressure situation like that, he just nonchalantly dinked it over David Marshall. Who knows whether we would've gone on to win the shootout, as Martyn Waghorn went on to miss his too, although not a lot of people remember that miss.

It happened three years ago for crying out loud. We should move on. As Kermorgant says in his interview, our club has moved on. We have new owners, we are in a better position than we were back then and have a great shot of getting automatic promotion. How can we move forward when we are always looking back at the miss? Just get over it.

And if we do boo him tonight it's only likely to do one thing, make him play better. He will be relishing the opportunity to score against us tonight, just like he was when he scored what proved to be the winner back in August at the Valley, putting his fingers to his lips to the Leicester fans at the other end of the pitch.

After a lacklustre defeat against Huddersfield in the FA Cup, Peterborough in the league last weekend and all our promotion rivals winning at the weekend and falling to fifth, tonight is a massive game. City fans should concentrate all their efforts on getting behind our players, not channeling their emotions on one man.

Glenfield United Weekly Review: 17/02/2013

Eight Glenfield United teams were in action this weekend as the end of season comes into view on the horizon.

Glenfield United Under 14's were looking for their first win of the season as they took on third placed Thurmaston Magpies at Gynsill Lane.

Both sides played good passing football during the opening exchanges, with Glenfield holding their own against a side that beat them 8-0 in the reverse fixture back in November.

However, two quick goals after the twenty minute mark gave the visitors the lead. Firstly, a long range strike from midfielder number 16 gave the Magpies the lead before two minutes later, number four added a second.

United were still playing well though, and surprised the visitors when they were the ones to score two quick goals at the start of the second half to level the scores. The first goal came from good team play in the build up before captain Harry Moir fired into the bottom corner. Three minutes later, a corner from Charlie Royle went in off the shins of a Thurmaston defender.

However, Thurmaston's number four grabbed his second and restored the visitors' lead five minutes later, dribbling into the box and avoiding some Glenfield tackles before finishing.

Number 16 for Thurmaston added a fourth, poking home after a goalmouth melee from a corner, before centre backs numbers three and five rounded off the scoring to make it 6-2 to the Magpies.

The result means Glenfield remain at the bottom of the table, while Thurmaston move up to second.

The lunchtime game saw Glenfield United Lions Under 9's take on Kingsway Rangers. Lions started the game in seventh place, while Rangers started one place and three points better off.

Five minutes in and Rangers took the lead. A corner from the left saw an initial shot hit the post, but number six was quickest to react to score.

Glenfield were playing well though, and had the best chance of the first half as striker Harry Laundon had a shot cleared off the line.

Two minutes into the second half and Rangers doubled their lead as number six scored from a tight angle.

Number four then added a third, tapping home from a few yards from a corner.

Glenfield deservedly got on the scoresheet five minutes before full time as Kalon Taylor turned and shot into the bottom left corner.

Kingsway got a fourth three minutes from time. A freekick was blocked by the Glenfield defence, but number two followed up to make it 4-1.

Number six had the perfect chance to get a hat-trick as Kingsway were awarded a penalty in the last minute, but it was superbly saved from the Glenfield 'keeper.

The result leaves the Lions in seventh. They travel to third place Rugby Town Tigers in a fortnight.

The final game of the day saw Glenfield United Under 18's take on Fleckney Athletic.

United started the day in ninth place, while visitors Fleckney were in seventh.

It was a disastrous start for Glenfield as they conceded inside the opening minute. A mix up between defender Jack Lane and 'keeper Mitch Sewell saw Fleckney's number nine capitalise.

However, Glenfield responded well and equalised inside the opening ten minutes through Dan Squires, firing low into the bottom corner.

The old saying goes that you're always most vulnerable when you have just scored and that proved to be the case as Fleckney regained the lead, number 11 squaring to number nine who had a simple tap in at the back post.

Glenfield were pushing hard for a second equaliser, but were dealt a blow when a penalty was awarded for a foul on Fleckney's number nine. The striker took it himself and got his hat-trick as he sent the 'keeper the wrong way.

The second half wasn't exactly eventful. Glenfield were looking for a way back into the match but Fleckney coped comfortably. Ten minutes from time they made it 4-1 as number ten scored with a free header at the back post.

The result leaves Glenfield in ninth. They travel to face top of the table Anstey Swifts next weekend.

Glenfield United results: Glenfield United Tigers U8 L-W Melton Foxes Cubs U8, Glenfield United Lions U9 1-4 Kingsway Rangers U9, Glenfield United U11 9v9 2-2 Melton Foxes 2009 U11 9v9, Medbourne Juniors U12 9v9 5-2 Glenfield United U12 9v9, Glenfield United U14 2-6 Thurmaston Magpies JFC, Saffron Dynamo Juniors U14 4-1 Glenfield United 2005 U14, Asfordby Amateurs 2010 U14 10-4 Glenfield United U14,  Glenfield United U18 1-4 Fleckney Athletic U18.

Glenfield United Weekly Review: 10/02/2013

A dark and damp Sunday it was, but no matter as the long awaited Glenfield Sports Pavilion was open and in use for the first time.

The first game of the day was actually at Ellis Park as Glenfield United U12 9v9's took on bottom of the table Barrow Town 2007 U12 9v9.

It was a fairly even opening twenty minutes, with the hosts coming closest as Sam Greenhill's shot was turned onto the post by the Barrow's keepers legs.

The deadlock was broken moments later, and it came from the visitors as number 12 had a tap in after the Glenfield 'keeper spilt an initial shot - the wet conditions probably playing a part.

United were hoping to go in at just one down at half time, but Barrow's lead was doubled three minutes before the break. A cross from the right was turned in again by number 12, a lovely finish into the top corner.

The goal meant a bigger mountain to climb for Glenfield going into the second half as they looked for a way back into the match. And despite creating chances, it was Barrow who got the third. A ball from the right fell to number 12 in the area who finished and completed his hat-trick.

The game looked to be won, but five minutes from time United had a glimmer of hope to get something from the game. Oliver Lewis was put through one on one with the Barrow 'keeper after outrunning the defence and side footed finish into the bottom left corner.

A comeback looked unlikely as full time approached, but a second Glenfield goal did arrive to give the hosts hope. A cross into the area was cleared only as far as Daniel Youngs who drilled a shot through a handful of bodies and into the bottom corner.

It proved too little too late though as the referee blew for full time seconds later. The result gave Barrow their first win of the season, while Glenfield are in sixth with 11 points. They travel to second placed Medbourne Juniors next week.

Glenfield United Tigers U10's were looking to bounce back from their 3-1 defeat at home to Melton last week as they welcomed bottom of the table Anstey Swifts Thunder to Gynsill Lane.

Things looked to be continuing the same way as the last game, as despite a positive start from Glenfield, it was the visitors who took the lead. Good work from Anstey's number seven down the right wing saw him square the ball to two players in the box, with number nine applying a simple finish.

Glenfield pushed for an equaliser, with Harry Noble coming closest in the first half as his shot flashed wide of the post.

Having cursed their luck for most of the game looking for an equaliser, ten minutes from time the scores were level in fortuitous circumstances. A shot from Tait Hemstock took a deflection of an Anstey defenders boot and into the net.

By this point the momentum was with Glenfield and minutes later they were in the lead. Good play between the Noble twins saw Harry play a great pass to James who finished into the bottom corner.

Anstey were now the team looking for a leveller but it didn't come as Glenfield won their first home game of the season. The result leaves Glenfield on nine points with three wins from nine games. Their next game is away to top of the table Hamilton Youth in a fortnight.

The final game of the day saw Glenfield United Under 14 2010 take on Cosby United. Glenfield went into the game in third place looking for their first win of 2013, while Cosby began the day in eighth.

And it was the visitors who took a surprise lead from the penalty spot. After an innocuous looking foul, number six stepped up and shot low into the net.

Cosby weren't ahead for long though. A right sided corner led to a goalmouth scramble before Dillon Smith found the back of the net.

The score remained level until just after the second half. A cross from the right fell to midfielder Dane Mace who arrowed a shot into the top left corner to give Glenfield the lead.

Mace then scored a second goal with a similar finish to his first which began a manic five minutes.

Glenfield were awarded a penalty moments after making it 3-1. Goalkeeper Oliver Fenton made the long journey forward to take the spot kick, but had to make the long journey back straight away has his Cosby counterpart saved it.

A fourth did come not long after though, and it was the goal of the game as Alex Pullen unleashed a shot from outside the area which bent into the top corner, leaving the Cosby 'keeper nowhere.

With 20 minutes left the game was all but won. Cosby did pull a goal back five minutes from time as a pass from number seven inadvertently hit the shins of defender Ben Walker, but it was a comfortable win and a good performance from Glenfield as they look to win the league.

The 4-2 win sees Glenfield go up to second, level on points with leaders Harborough Town 2012, although they do have three games in hand.

Peterborough United v Leicester City - Match Preview

Six out of six. That's the aim for Nigel Pearson's men as they aim to get their sixth consecutive league win of 2013 when they make the short visit to London Road to face Peterborough United on Saturday.

Pearson has a fully fit squad to choose from after a nine day rest from the last game against Wolves. Midfielder Matty James and defender Liam Moore were both absent from that game with knocks, while defenders Sean St Ledger and Zak Whitbread also return after longer term injuries.

Andy King and Kasper Schmeichel come back from midweek international duty with Wales and Denmark respsctively and both go into the squad.

Bottom of the table Peterborough will be without defender Scott Wootton as the Manchester United loanee has a hamstring injury.

That means Gabriel Zakuani could continue at centre back, although Nathaniel Knight-Percival, Shaun Brisley, Michael Bostwick and Craig Alcock are also capable of filling in.

Spurs loanee Alex Pritchard is pushing for a first start after coming off the bench in the 2-2 draw against Burnley last Saturday.

George Boyd is expected to start despite him being expected to leave the club on loan once the window opens on Friday. He was expected to join Nottingham Forest on deadline day but the deal fell through after a failed eye test.

The two sides last met on the opening day of the season, with the Foxes winning 2-0 thanks to second half goals from Wes Morgan and Andy King.

Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson: "Leicester are a very strong team and in my opinion they have the best squad in the division.

"They have some good wingers and I watched them last week myself against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

"I am looking forward to the game though, we are determined to get the right result ahead of the break next week."

Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson: "They are a side you always have to be conscious of, because they will play their brand of football. They will be working very hard to get a game-plan together which will cause us problems.

"You can't take anything for granted, as we know. It still remains a tough league to be consistent in.

"We have been consistent recently, but it is about the next game. What has happened in the past few months is not really relevant because we will be judged on this result."

Match odds:

Peterborough (18/5) Draw (3/1) Leicester (4/6)

Peterborough to win 1-0 (14/1) 2-2 draw (12/1) Leicester to win 3-1 (11/1)

Tommy Rowe to score first (12/1) David Nugent to score a brace (5/1)

Glenfield United Weekly Review: 03/02/2013

After two weeks of full fixture list postponements due to the snow, Glenfield United action returned this week with eight teams in action.

First up to resume their season were the Glenfield United U11 9v9 team. They were looking to record back to back wins after their 5-1 win against East Goscote three weeks ago but faced a Loughborough Dynamo side who sat comfortably in mid table and five points better off. However, United were given an instant advantage as the visitors could only field eight players.

The eight men of Dynamo held their own for the opening twenty minutes and should have taken the lead after ten minutes as the number 14 rounded the Glenfield 'keeper but missed an open goal. That miss proved costly as three goals in the next five minutes put the game in Glenfield's control.

Firstly, a right wing corner was cleared but worked back into the box before the ball fell to Louis Taylor who shot into the bottom right corner. Less than a minute later Pattison Mafauna doubled the lead with a driven shot into the bottom corner, despite the best efforts of the Dynamo keeper who got a hand to it. The third came from an own goal as Pattison's shot went in off the shins of Dynamo's number five.

That's how the score stayed until ten minutes into the second half when the floodgates opened, despite a missed penalty by Jacob Taylor.

Ariyan Palana scored twice in as many minutes, firstly with a side footed finish into the bottom right corner and then after receiving a pass from the always threatening James Pye, took a touch to go past a Dynamo defender before another good finish to make it 5-0.

Pattison scored twice in the final eight minutes to bring up his hat-trick, the third being another trademark drilled effort into the bottom right corner before Ariyan also got his third with a header on the line after Pattison's strike hit the bar to complete the scoring at 8-0.

The win sees Glenfield move up one place to 10th in the table with 12 points, just two behind Dynamo in eighth.

The second game of the day saw Glenfield United Tigers U10 take on Melton Foxes Cubs at Gynsill Lane, their first home game since the start of November.

And it was the visitors who took the lead after just two minutes as a shot from Melton's captain and number 10 went through the legs of the Glenfield 'keeper.

United weren't disheartened though, creating chances throughout the remainder of the first half and were unlucky not to go in at half time level.

The second half was much of the same, with Glenfield having the better of the opening stages forcing corner after corner but couldn't find the elusive equaliser. Then on the counter attack Melton scored a second through number three.

With ten minutes of the game left Glenfield found a way back into the match as Harry Noble's cross was turned into his own net by the visitors' number eight.

The Foxes continuted to push for another goal that their performance deserved but were caught again on the counter attack in the last minute as they pushed forward for an equaliser, number 10 scoring his second of the game.

Perhaps on another day Glenfield would have taken all three points but it was Melton who returned victorious. The defeat for the Foxes sees them in seventh with six points but have the opportunity to bounce back as they host bottom of the table Anstey Swifts Thunder on Sunday.

The final game of the day saw Glenfield United U18's take on Wigston United. The hosts were on a good run of form having won their last game 5-3 at Leicester Bharat, but visitors Wigston are in a good position for the title lying in fourth but with four games in hand on leaders Anstey and with just one defeat all season.

The visitors took the lead after 12 minutes as a shot from number 11 from the edge of the area went under Glenfield 'keeper Mitch Sewell and into the bottom corner.

United, who only had 11 players for the game, weren't overly troubled by the hosts though and even created the odd chance for the remainder of the first half. But five minutes from time Wigston were awarded a penalty as Sam Gill fouled Wigston's left winger.

It was scored by number 13, but their was controversy in the build up. The referee blew and as the Wigston player ran up, handled the ball to replace it on the spot. He ran up again and scored and the goal stood.

Glenfield got a goal back five minutes before half time as centre back Kyle McLauchlan headed in from a corner and the hosts were back in the game going into the second half.

But Wigston scored a third just five minutes after the break as number six held off a challenge before shooting into the bottom corner.

It could have been four ten minutes later but a superb save from 'keeper Sewell, shades of Gordon Banks vs Pele, denied Wigston as he palmed a downwards header round the post.

A fourth did come though through number four twenty minutes from time and by this time the legs and minds of Glenfield were beginning to tire as errors began to sneak into the game.

Wigston capatilised with some quickfire goals, including number four scoring twice more to complete his hat-trick as the game finished with an 8-1 victory for the hosts.

Glenfield remain ninth in the table and face second placed Oadby Owls at Gynsill Lane on Sunday.

Leicester City v Wolves - Match Preview

While everyone's attention tonight will be focussed on the last few hours of the January transfer window, Leicester City and Wolves will be battling it out in a Midlands derby infront of the Sky Sports cameras.

It's been a disappointing last year for the visitors, with four managers at the helm during that period. Much to some people's surprise Mick McCarthy was sacked with the team deeply involved in a relegation battle.

Even more surprising was the eventual decision to replace the Yorkshireman with his assistant Terry Connor. He couldn't prevent the West Midlands outfit getting relegated, but  many thought they would bounce back with new players and a new manager in Stale Solbakken. But the Norwegian was sacked earlier this month following their FA Cup defeat to non-league Luton Town, so now former Welsh international Dean Saunders is the man charged with turning their fortunes around.

It won't be easy though. Currently on a nine game streak without a win, Wolves lie in 19th and are just five points off the relegation zone. Following Saturday's 2-1 home defeat to Blackpool, Saunders said that he has to get a couple of wins to pull away from the bottom three. Things don't get much harder in the Championship though than a trip to the King Power Stadium.

Leicester are unbeaten since Boxing Day in all competitions and are the only team in the second tier to still have a 100% record in 2013. The Foxes also have the best defence in the division (23 goals conceded in 28 games) and are joint top home scorers (33 goals in 14 games).

City are second in the Championship table and also second in the form table, while Wolves are bottom. On paper, it looks like a simple home win. But as we have seen in the Championship throughout the seasons, the form book is thrown out of the window.

Team news

Leicester's Anthony Knockaert is a major doubt after missing Saturday's FA Cup tie with Huddersfield with an ankle injury.

Manager Nigel Pearson made six changes for that game, so the likes of Chris Wood, David Nugent and Danny Drinkwater are all expected to be restored to the starting line up.

Defender Sean St Ledger has returned to action following his hamstring injury but this game will come too soon for the Irish international. Zak Whitbread remains sidelined with a calf injury.

Wolves will be without centre-back Roger Johnson as he serves a three match ban following his red card against Blackpool on Saturday.

Defender Stephen Ward is fit, but Razak Boukari, Stephen Hunt, Steve Mouyokolo, Wayne Hennessey and George Elokobi are all out.

What the managers say

Leicester boss Nigel Pearson: "For us, Thursday is another opportunity to get ahead of our opponents. If we get the right result, we can put pressure on the teams around us.

"We know they have some good players, but we have to make sure our performance is right.

"We can't spend too much time concerning ourselves with the opposition and their status, but we're aware of the players they have."

Wolves manager Dean Saunders: "When you're not winning games, players lose confidence.

"When you're on a losing run, you wonder where the next goal is coming from, where the next performance is coming from, you worry that the we're not playing very well and the players don't feel sharp.

"I'd rather look at the positives from Saturday - the first half performance was the best we've had since I've been here."

Huddersfield Town v Leicester City - Match Preview

Leicester City take a break from their league programme on Saturday when they travel to managerless Huddersfield in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup.

The Terriers sacked manager Simon Grayson on Thursday after going 12 games without a win in the Championship and less than a year in charge. During that time he guided Huddersfield out of League One after beating Sheffield United in the playoff final, finishing an 11-year absence from the second tier of English football.

Academy coaches Mark Lillis and Steve Eyre will take charge of this game and will be without Jermaine Beckford and Neil Danns as both are ineligible to play against their parent club.

Winger Danny Ward (foot) and defender Joel Lynch (hamstring) both remain sidelined, while midfielder Adam Clayton is a doubt after sustaining a knee injury in last weekend's 4-0 defeat at Watford.

Keith Southern replaced the Northern Irish international during that game and could start, while Oliver Norwood and Scott Arfield are also options.

Nigel Pearson has said that he is likely to make changes for the trip to Yorkshire with Andy King, Lloyd Dyer and Martyn Waghorn all possible starters.

Defenders Sean St Ledger and Zak Whitbread remain out with hamstring and calf injuries respectively, so Wes Morgan and Michael Keane are likely to start at centre back. Liam Moore is also an option.

Academy striker Joe Dodoo has been named in the squad, while midfielder Richie Wellens is fully fit after recovering from his knee injury.

This will be the third time both teams have met this season, with the Foxes running out victorious both times in memorable fashion. A 2-0 win at the John Smith's Stadium in October saw Anthony Knockaert score two goal of the season contenders, while the start of 2013 was heralded in with a 6-1 win at the King Power Stadium as debutant Chris Wood bagged a brace.

Huddersfield Town caretaker manager Mark Lillis: "There are no points to play for on Saturday, so perhaps the pressure is less, but it is an FA Cup tie with a view to getting into the Fifth Round.

"In the end it's important because it's a game of football for Huddersfield Town. I've had 14 years here now as a player and now a coach. When I played here I wasn't the best player, but I knew that if I put a shift in the players would get behind me and we've challenged the players to do that.

"Leicester are near the top of the League; they're a good outfit. They have a good, experienced manager and have some real athletes in their team. It will be a hard game."

Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson: "We have played them twice this season and we will have to put on a professional performance because they will want a response.

"Both sides will be aware of each other's strengths and weaknesses but, in cup competitions, on any given day, strange things can happen. You've got to be mentally prepared for the game, but also go out and make sure you perform.

"It will be a different game to the last time we played them in that they will be more positive at home and they will want to put on a good show. We've got to be right for it."

Match odds: Huddersfield (7/2) Draw (11/4) Leicester (8/11)

Huddersfield to win 2-1 (12/1) 0-0 Draw (14/1) Leicester to win 3-1 (12/1)

James Vaughan to score first (7/1) Anthony Knockaert to score a brace (20/1)

Leicester City v Middlesbrough - Match Preview

Leicester City welcome promotion rivals Middlesbrough to the King Power Stadium looking to make it five wins in a row in front of the Sky Sports cameras on Friday night.

Following last weekend's emphatic 4-0 win over Bristol City, the Foxes moved above Boro in the Championship table and could be in an automatic promotion place on Friday night if they win.

Nigel Pearson is likely to name an unchaged team after last Saturday's win so Anthony Knockaert should start despite being substituted early in the last game as a precaution.

Chris Wood, with six goals in his first three games in a City shirt following his move from West Brom, will partner David Nugent upfront, while Wes Morgan and Michael Keane should continue their partnership at centre back.

Fellow defenders Sean St Ledger (hamstring) and Zak Whitbread (calf) remain sidelined, but Jamie Vardy is pushing for a place on the bench after recovering from his heel injury.

Middlesbrough could welcome back striker Marvin Emnes (hamstring) and defenders Andre Bikey (hamstring) and Justin Hoyte (hip).

The trio have been out for several games but returned to training this week, and providing they don't report any ill effects, should make the trip. However, the game will come too soon for Jonathan Woodgate.

Striker Ishmael Miller and midfielder Josh McEachran face late fitness tests after they both limped out during Saturday's loss to Watford.

Miller has a hamstring problem, while Chelsea loanee McEachran aggrevated his ankle.

Boro go into the game on the back of two consecutive league defeats and have lost seven of their 13 league games so far on their travels.

Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson: "At the moment it's about keeping our focus on getting performances right, because we know we have good players.

"There's no getting away from the fact that the players have been performing well. Against Bristol City, we have played better than that this season, but we were able to get an emphatic win, which is really important for us at the moment.

"Middlesbrough are having a really good season. Tony is very thorough with his preparation and they will be a difficult nut to crack."

Middlesbrough boss Tony Mowbray: "We've had a tough two or three weeks with players being unavailable but every team's the same and we have to get on with it.

"We have a few back and a few options and it's looking better on the selection front than it was a few weeks ago."

Match odds: Leicester (4/6) Draw (11/4) Middlesbrough (4/1)

Leicester to win 3-1 (11/1) 2-2 draw (13/2) Middlesbrough to win 2-1 (12/1)

Chris Wood to score a brace (4/1) Scott McDonald to score first (7/1)

Glenfield United Weekly Review: 13/01/2013

The cold weather from Saturday evening led to several Glenfield United games being called off the following day, with both under seven home games and the under nine Tigers game at Anstey postponed.

However, five games that did go ahead on Sunday, including Glenfield United 2005 U14's who welcomed third placed Saffron Dynamo Juniors to Gynsill Lane.

After a pretty even first half but nothing to report on, it looked as if the sides would be going in at half time goalless. But two goals in the final three minutes for the visitors, the first coming in fortuitous circumstances, changed the complex of the game.

Firstly, a run down the right wing by number 16 didn't appear to cause any danger to the Glenfield goal. He reached the byline before crossing in a hopeful ball which went over the 'keeper and in off the left hand post.

The second goal came at the end of the half, as number 17 had a shot from the edge of the area, which again went in with some assistance from the post.

Despite the double blow, Glenfield were still in the game and came close to reducing the arrears ten minutes into the second half. Luke Savage hit a long range strike which beat the Shepshed 'keeper but hit the bar as the woodwork again did the visitors a favour.

To rub salt into the wounds, Shepshed added a third minutes later as a cross from the right was headed in by number 16 for his second of the game.

Glenfield weren't disheartened though and caused Shepshed some problems during the last 20 minutes of the game. They got a goal which there performance and perseverance deserved inside the last ten minutes as Joseph Dolman scored from inside the area.

But any chance of a comeback were stifled when Shepshed added a fourth two minutes from full time as number 17 got his second. A pacy run into box saw him hold off the defenders challenge and although his first shot got saved, he tucked away the rebound.

The final word went to the Glenfield 'keeper though after Shepshed were awarded a penalty. Number 12 stepped up and shot to the left of the 'keeper who palmed it away, before denying number seven with his legs.

The 4-1 win means Shepshed move up to second in the table, while Glenfield remain eighth. United have the perfect chance to exact revenge when the sides meet in the reverse fixture next week.

Glenfield United Under 18's were looking to build on their spirited performance from last Sunday in the defeat to Friar Lane as they travelled to Leicester Bharat.

It wasn't the best of starts for Glenfield though as the hosts went 2-0 up, the second a screamer from number 10 from 35 yards.

They responded well though and got a goal back midway through the first half. A Jake Seaton shot was saved but Junior Banjo pounced, rounding the keeper and slotting into an empty net.

The same duo then combined for Glenfield's equaliser before half time. A through ball from winger Seaton unleashed Banjo who rounded the 'keeper again and scored.

But just a couple of minutes into the second half Glenfield were behind again as they were punished for failing to clear a corner.

United then equalised for the second time in the game and Banjo got his hat-trick in a similar fashion to his first two, breaking away from the defence and finishing calmly.

And for the first time Glenfield took the lead. Jacob Parkes outpaced the Bharat left back before powering an effort from an acute angle and into the net.

The scoring was complete as that man Banjo got his fourth to give Glenfield a 5-3 victory which leaves them ninth in the table but closes the gap on Bharat, the team above them, to just two points. They host sixth placed Houghton Rangers next weekend looking to continue a good start to 2013.

Finally, Glenfield United Under 14's County Cup run came to an end on Sunday as they lost 3-2 at Blaby & Whetstone. United, with just 11 players to call upon and no substitutes, were 2-0 up at half time, but the hosts came back to book their place in the semi finals.

Glenfield United results: Glenfield United Hawks U7 P-P Oadby Owls Hawks U7, Glenfield United Foxes U7 P-P Kirby Muxloe Kings U7, Fleckney Athletic U9 3-2 Glenfield United Lions U9, Anstey Swifts Storm P-P Glenfield United Tigers U9, Glenfield United U12 9v9 9-0 Loughborough Dynamo U12 9v9, Blaby & Whetstone BC FC U14 3-2 Glenfield United U14, Glenfield United 2005 U14 1-4 Saffron Dynamo Juniors U14, Leicester Bharat U18 3-5 Glenfield United U18.

Bristol City v Leicester City - Match Preview

Leicester travel to Bristol City on Saturday, looking to continue their good form with a fourth consecutive win in all competitions.

But although the hosts are just one place and one point off the bottom of the Championship table, they do have a good record against Leicester, losing only twice in the last eight meetings.

Last week's 2-0 victory against Burton Albion in the FA Cup saw manager Nigel Pearson rest a few key players, and all are set to return for the trip to Ashton Gate.

David Nugent should partner Chris Wood up front, while Anthony Knockaert is also likely to start after his superb performance in the last league game against Huddersfield on New Years Day.

The Foxes could also welcome back Jamie Vardy. The striker has been absent with a heel injury sustained in the defeat to Cardiff before Christmas and is likely to have a place on the bench.

However, defenders Sean St Ledger (hamstring) and Zak Whitbread (calf) are still out, meaning Wes Morgan and Man United loanee Michael Keane are set to continue as a centre back partnership.

Bristol City welcome back striker Sam Baldock after missing the FA Cup tie against Blackburn last week with a knee injury.

Midfielder Liam Kelly could make his debut after signing from Kilmarnock on Thursday for £200,000, but winger Martyn Woolford has left the club, signing for Championship rivals Millwall.

Joe Bryan has recovered from a hip injury and could feature, but the Robins will be without Marvin Elliott (groin) and Albert Adomah who is at the African Nations Cup with Ghana.

Bristol City manager Derek McInnes: "When we last played them I felt they were one of the best sides in the league.

"If we allow them to get their tails up they can be a formidable team and they proved that when they dispatched Huddersfield last time out.

"We feel we can cause them problems, but we must make it difficult for them to play or we will have our work cut out."

Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson: "It's another potential banana skin in that it's a game people will expect us to do well in, given the league positions of both sides.

"But it's not been too happy a place for us to go in recent years, so we’ll want to rectify that.

"We know that they are desperate to get results, certainly at home they're a different proposition and they've been involved in games with plenty of goals.

“We have players that are playing pretty well, good competition in the squad and it's important we go there with a positive mind-set and look to build on what we've done in the last couple of weeks.”

Match odds:

Bristol City (7/2) Draw (11/4) Leicester (8/11)

Bristol City to win 3-2 (33/1) 2-2 draw (12/1) Leicester to win 2-0 (8/1)

Sam Baldock to score first (7/1) Chris Wood to score a hat trick (25/1)

Capital One Cup Semi Final First Leg Previews

Four teams remain in the Capital One Cup, a trophy which has already served up its fair share of drama, shock and magic.

The story of the season so far has been League Two side Bradford City beating giants Arsenal on penalties in the last round.

It wasn't just the Gunners though who have been shocked by Phil Parkinson's men. Since the first round they have beaten teams in the three divisions above them, including another top flight opponent, Wigan Athletic.

The cup run has also secured the club's short term future, with the semi finals alone bringing in £1m in gate receipts and lucrative television money.

They are now just 180 minutes from Wembley, and face an Aston Villa side who are certainly vulnerable as Parkinson suggests: "We have to take advantage of the fact they've conceded a lot of goals," Parkinson told BBC Radio Leeds.

"It doesn't matter what level you play at, if you concede that number of goals then there is a vulnerability there, confidence-wise"

Villa conceded 15 goals in three games over Christmas, although a corner could well be turning after a 2-2 draw at Swansea was followed by progression in the FA Cup after seeing off Ipswich Town.

But the Midlands side have good pedigree in this competition, winning it five times including the inaugral competition in 1961.

This season they have knocked out Manchester City and Norwich, and manager Paul Lambert said a trip to Wembley would be "extraordinary"

The Scot said: "For this club to get to Wembley again would be extraordinary."
"In a one-off game there you just never know what could happen. I think every player would tell you it would be absolutely phenomenal."

The other semi final sees favourites Chelsea take on Swansea City, with the Welsh side again impressing neutrals with their slick passing style under Michael Laudrup.

Should the Swans overcome Chelsea, it will be the first cup final in their history and a return to Wembley since beating Reading in the Championship playoff final in 2011 to gain promotion to the Premier League.

Chelsea go into the game on the back of a 5-1 victory at Southampton in the FA Cup, with new signing Demba Ba scoring twice on his debut.

And the striker is eligible to play in Wednesday's game, giving Rafael Benitez a selection dilema over Ba and £50m striker Fernando Torres.

The likes of Eden Hazard and Juan Mata are likely to start as Chelsea target their first trophy in five attempts this season after losing out in the Community Shield, European Super Cup and Club World Championship as well as being knocked out of the Champions League.

Capital One Cup Semi Final First Legs: Tuesday 8 January - Bradford City v Aston Villa. Wednesday 9 January - Chelsea v Swansea City

Glenfield United Weekly Review: 06/01/2013

After a couple of weeks off over the festive period, six Glenfield United teams resumed action this weekend.

The Under 11 9v9 team kicked off 2013 with a clash against East Goscote. United went into the game 11th in the table, with the visitors just one place and three points ahead.

Glenfield put on some early pressure from the outset and were rewarded with two goals in the opening five minutes.

Firstly, a corner from the right fell to James Pye and the striker shot into the bottom left corner before a shot from the edge of the area by Ariyan Balana went under the keeper, hit the right hand post and sneaked over the line.

Pye then grabbed his second of the game halfway through the first half with a terrific goal. A superb solo run saw him go fast a couple of East Goscote defenders before finishing past the keeper.

It was a fantastic first half performance from Glenfield, far better than their league standing suggests, and they could have had more in the opening half an hour.

A fourth goal did come just a few minutes into the second half from the impressive Pattison Mafauna.

A powerful run from midfield saw him advance into the area before unleashing a powerful strike into the bottom corner.

The visitors scored a consolation ten minutes from time as number eight's run into the box was spotted by number five before shooting low into the net.

Glenfield almost restored their four goal lead immediately as midfielder Mafauna hit the bar with another strong effort.

United weren't to be denied though as Pye got his deserved hat-trick, with a similar goal to his second - another jinxing run from the middle of the park before finishing into the bottom left corner.

The win puts both sides on nine points, with Glenfield having a better goal difference.

The final game of the day saw Glenfield United Under 18's looking for their first home league win of the season as they took on fifth placed Friar Lane.

The visitors took the lead after 15 minutes. A cross from the right was met by the unmarked number 17 who took a touch in the box before firing a low shot into the bottom corner.

Glenfield didn't let their heads drop though and pushed for an equaliser which came halfway through the first half from the spot, Jake Seaton winning the penalty.

The winger took it himself and found the bottom corner with a confident left footed strike.

United were performing well against a side who are likely to be challenging for the title when the season comes to its conclusion, and their goal wasn't really troubled by the visitors.

The next goal wasn't until the hour mark, and it went to Friar Lane. The ball fell nicely to the visitors' number six in the area and he volleyed it into the bottom right corner.

Despite pushing for a second equaliser the visitors held on. It was a spirited performance from Glenfield, but they remain ninth in the table. Their next game is away to Leicester Bharat on Sunday, the team immediately above them.

Glenfield United results: Barrow Town Hawks U10 4-2 Glenfield United Tigers U10, Glenfield United U11 9v9 5-1 East Goscote Juniors U11 9v9, Glenfield United U14 2-6 Ravenstone Youth FC U14, FC Khalsa U14 5-1 Glenfield United 2005 U14, Karma FC U14 2-1 Glenfield United 2010 U14, Glenfield United U18 1-2 Friar Lane Junior & Youth FC U18.

Leicester City v Burton Albion - Match Preview

Leicester City's FA Cup campaign kicks off this Saturday, as they welcome League Two side Burton Albion to the King Power Stadium in the third round.

The Foxes will be all to aware of the banana skin that awaits as Albion knocked Nigel Pearson's men out of the Capital One Cup in August.

Pearson made eight changes for that game and he may be reluctant to make as many this time around.

Ben Marshall is a doubt after going off injured during the 6-1 thrashing of Huddersfield on New Year's Day. Jamie Vardy (heel) has returned to training but the game will be too soon for him to feature, while defenders Zak Whitbread (calf) and Sean St Ledger (hamstring) remain out.

Jesse Lingard has returned to Manchester United after his loan spell, but City hope to extend fellow Old Trafford youngster Michael Keane's stay so he could feature. Neil Danns has returned from his time at Bristol City and is also an option.

Andy King, Liam Moore, Martyn Waghorn and Lloyd Dyer are all pushing for starts, as is Paul Gallagher who has come off the bench in the past three games.

Burton look set to be without defender Anthony O'Connor after he went off during their 3-0 defeat at York.

However, fellow defenders Nathan Stanton and Zander Diamond return from suspension and illness respectively. Loan signing Adam Drury could start after coming in Manchester City earlier this week.

Some of Burton's greatest ever results have come in the FA Cup. In 2006 they held a Manchester United side which included the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Gerard Pique to a goalless draw, while five years later they beat Championship side Middlesbrough 2-1.

Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson: "We’ve got to make sure our own game is right, that’s the bottom line.”
"The FA Cup always throws up a few shocks and we have to make sure we’re not one of them.

"It was a long time ago (the previous meeting in the League Cup), it wasn't a game we performed well in, but it's a totally different scenario"

Burton manager and former Leicester defender Gary Rowett: "It's always nice to go back to your old clubs. It's a very different club from when I was there, although it wasn't too many moons ago.

"But the fact we have gone back once and beaten them will make it a little bit more difficult to do so again but it gives the players belief we can do it.

"We take a huge amount of confidence from beating them but we have to be aware it will be a different proposition. They will probably have four of five more regular first-team players in their side."

Match odds:

Leicester (1/4) Draw (9/2) Burton Albion (11/1)

Leicester to win 4-0 (11/1) 2-2 draw (22/1) Burton to win 2-1 (28/1)

Andy King to score first (10/1) Billy Kee to score anytime (4/1)
